Within the first week of school summer sport sign ups were underway and it was fantastic to see our students eager to get involved. We had SHCS students taking part in cricket, rowing, volleyball, touch, golf, athletics, futsal, water polo, water skiing and triathlons

Once again Covid has taken many of our major tournaments away from the teams but locally our competitions have continued in modified forms. Maadi Cup for rowing was limited to intermediate and senior crews, we took 8 students away and they had a great week considering the late changes and some rowers entering races and boats that they haven’t competed in all season. One of these being Olivia Ollerenshaw in the U17 Single Scull. She qualified 3rd fastest into the A Final. It was a fantastic race and there were 3 boats tussling it out for 3rd including Olivia.

A disappointment for the school this term was the cancellation of our Athletics Day. This is always a top event in the school calendar but unfortunately we were unable to proceed. Instead SHCS and Columba combined for a small and modified morning with some of our top athletic athletes. Congratulations to Bernice Cullen, Zara Geddes and Billie Crowe who won their events. Bernice and Zara have had a great athletic season with club events, Bernice claimed 2 gold medals at the recent national club championships for Long Jump and Triple Jump. Zara won the U18 2000m Steeple chase.

Congratulations to the following students that have been selected in the Otago Academy of Sport: Gemma Rowcroft, Bernice Cullen, Zara Geddes and Demi McAlwee.

From Erin and myself, we would like to send a big thank you out to all our summer coaches, managers, parent helpers and supporters who have helped make this term a great success. - Rachael Parker

2022 Sport Prefect Report

Sports Prefects -Bronte Crowe & Gemma Rowcroft

While this year has hit the sporting community with a few bumps, we have still been lucky enough to keep participating in various physical activities. Around our school community, a big focus of ours has been to increase physical activity in the school, even if it is a brisk walk at lunchtimes or a friendly game of cricket! Weekly sporting competitions girls are involved in, have also gone really well, as we have a number of girls participating and competing against other schools in numerous codes.

This year, athletics day was cancelled due to Covid. However, competitive athletes were still able to show their abilities in a combined athletics day with Columba and St Hilda’s. The girls represented St Hilda’s with pride and determination, some even breaking some school records with their talents. Although the house captains were unable to attend athletics day, they are truly excited for cross country, house cheerleading and other fantastic events coming up. The junior girls also have an exciting opportunity to participate in some house rivalry where they will be introduced to a new initiative, “Queen of the Court '', played during Friday lunchtimes to keep house competition and spirits high!

Bronte and I have also continued on with a lunchtime walking group ‘Walkie Talkies’, where we explore many local areas around the town belt while encouraging the importance of keeping active. This term, Walkie Talkies has been very successful, we have had a number of girls from a whole range of year levels attend our walks. As we approach winter and there become less opportunities to be outside, workout classes will be introduced in term 2. We want to provide a range of different movements so that everyone has the ability to attend the workouts that appeal to them the most. These range from, yoga, Les Mills classes, dance workouts and more.

We look forward to seeing St Hilda’s students getting out and participating in a variety of physical activities next term, which will be busy and hopefully not as disrupted as Term 1.
