Artist in Residence

Swaroopa is our Artist in Residence for this term, and is working closely with Senior Dance students learning Bharatanatyam (Classical Indian Dance) and choreographies based on Migrant Stories.

Here is some more information about Swaroopa, from her dance school 'Natyaloka' Facebook page.

'Natyaloka is a Dunedin based dance school for Indian dance forms Bharathanatyam and Mohiniyattam. Founded by Swaroopa Unni who was trained in these dance forms for more than 15 years in Kerala, India under Smt Kalamandalam Saraswathy, Sri Srikant and Smt Aswathy Srikant, she has recreated the lesson plans keeping the culturally vibrant Dunedin in mind. Swaroopa has performed at several stages across India as part of Nrityalaya School of Classical Dance (Calicut), and Abhinava Dance Company (Guru Nirupama & Rajendra, Bangalore). She has also won several awards at the State and University levels.

In Dunedin, Swaroopa has been performing and taking workshops under the banner of Natyaloka apart from running her dance classes.'
