Meet the Prefects

Gemma Rowcroft - Sports Prefect

Dunedin born and bred, that’s me! I started my schooling chapter at Kaikorai Primary School, where I spent most of my time participating in jump jam, ‘cops and robbers’, stopball and of course learning! After primary school, I then attended Balmacewen Intermediate and absolutely loved my time there. During my final stages of intermediate, the thought of heading off to high school was scary for me. When I attended the St Hilda’s Open Day as a Year 8, I was immediately welcomed and had many positive interactions. It was safe to say that I had my heart set on becoming a St Hilda’s girl.

As I arrived at St Hilda’s I had many opportunities thrown my way. I was really excited about meeting new people, particularly through sports. While being a junior, I always looked up to the seniors and I admired their achievements and successes. I have been involved in a number of sporting activities such as cricket, basketball, netball, touch and duathlon. Nowadays, I have focused more on touch and netball. School sports tournaments are probably my favorite part about being in a sports team. As a Year 13, I love being a part of the senior A netball team. I play alongside my Year 11 sister, Holly which I really enjoy. I have also coached the Year 9 and Junior A St Hilda’s touch team, which always brings me joy watching the growth of these players.

I love the fact that at St Hilda’s you soon become familiar with many faces and have the ability to connect with a variety of people. That is the beauty of attending a relatively small school. I also really appreciate my fellow Year 13 year group. Over the 5 years, we have been able to create cherishable memories through camps, activities and learning. One of my highlights that St Hilda’s has offered me, was attending the Abel Tasman trip. While experiencing the unreal scenery and some of NZ’s finest landscapes, bonding with most of my year group was also very memorable.

I am super grateful that I have been given the opportunity to be Sports Prefect this year alongside Bronte. We absolutely love our ‘Queen of the Court’ lunchtime games, where the juniors thoroughly enjoy throwing dodgeballs at us! Finding the smiles in small activities is really rewarding and we hope to continue our initiatives for the remainder of the year.
