Kaylee Bond - Head Boarder

Coming to St Hilds wasn’t the plan for me until the very start of Year 8. It had never crossed my mind to leave home at just 13 and move to Dunedin to live with well over 100 other girls. My best friend at the time, her sister went to St Hilda's and they took me to the school fair. I fell in love with the school and Tolcarne, and from that day on I had to try to convince my parents to let me go. Which took a lot of convincing and some help from Grandma - then I finally had them on board!

When I set sail to Dunedin from Balclutha I thought I'd struggle with Homesickness, however this wasn't the case and Tolcarne quickly felt like home. The memories I've made over the past 5 years mean a lot to me and I wouldn't change them for the world.

Since being at St Hilda's I've been offered so many amazing opportunities that I wouldn't have been able to have if I remained at home. I’ve been able to experience a higher excellence of sporting codes and have been privileged enough to have met a number of coaches over the years, who have helped me develop both as an athlete and an individual. The wider connections I've made while being at St Hilda's I believe will benefit me in the future.

Taking on the role of Head Boarder this year has been a huge privilege. At times it has been challenging, but seeing initiatives come to life and the smiles on our boarders faces really makes it worthwhile. It's been one of the best learning experiences I've experienced yet and I've developed many skills that no doubt will come in very handy as I move through life.

Next year I am continuing my studies at the University of Otago, completing a Bachelor of Commerce. Then after graduation, if all goes to plan I'll travel to Jersey (which is where my family is from) to work and then travel around Europe. I'm super excited for the next chapter in my life but it is going to be heartbreaking leaving Tolcarne, as it really does feel like my home and means a lot to me!
