Meet the Prefects

Stella Rathbone - Arts Prefect

Hello! I am originally from Havelock North, but I moved down here six years ago and began St Hilda’s at the beginning of Year 8. The only new Year 8 at St Hilda’s. I needed to climatize and befriend a whole group of strangers - all at the awkward age of 12. Six years later, I call myself a Dunedin girl and have formed beautiful relationships creating many fond memories. Having no choice in the decision to move from sunny Hawkes Bay to the freezing Dunedin, I’d say it has been a challenging journey. However, my interest in the arts has contributed to creating this positive experience.

I have danced ever since I was little. Attending a range of styles from Highland dancing to Hip-hop and Aerobics. And I have involved myself, especially in the dance environment here at St Hilda's especially. I have competed up and down the country from Wellington to Queenstown, with St Hilda’s Hip-hop crews and Aerobics teams since I have been here. Whether that was coaching or participating, it has always been a great adventure for the dancers to show their talent. I have currently just attended the 2022 Aerobics Nationals in Invercargill, with our aerobics team winning the national title! In 2021 I was part of the St Hilda’s school musical Footloose, definitely stepping out of my comfort zone (I can not sing) and I absolutely loved this experience. I would 100% recommend participating in your school musical, it is a supportive, entertaining and exciting group to be a part of.

For the past four years, I have also taken part in a variety of sports. Although this year my other commitments ended my netball journey at St Hilda's, I played for the Senior B for the past two years. Being in a team with a variety of girls of all ages, helped me develop strong connections within the school. Volleyball aided this too. Without being too pessimistic, Volleyball isn’t the strongest sport at St Hilda’s, but this allows our team to grow without any pressure and we enjoyed the game with each other - rather than the outcome.

I have adored my role as Arts Prefect in 2022. Lily Knox (Prefect buddy) and I have had the pleasure of liaising with our Showquest team this year. Which won the regional Southland/Otago competition and went onto win the ‘Best Cultural Story’ at the online nationals. A crazy-cool effort from the whole Showquest team! Organising an art item for assembly each week has surprisingly been running so smoothly this year. It shows the willingness of the girls to showcase their talent - which I love to see.

Strangely enough next year I am planning on studying Law at Otago. I have always enjoyed History and English throughout my schooling, so I will give Law a go! However, if I find I don’t want to continue with Law, I am happy to explore my creativity further in the arts somewhere…
