Sports Prefects and Liaison Reports

Sports Prefects - Bronte Crowe & Gemma Rowcroft

Term three has been huge for St Hilda’s sport. There have been a number of sporting events held, where St Hilda’s teams have competed extremely well. This year we were privileged to hold the Winter Quadrangular Tournament. This was a successful event with St Hilda’s taking 3rd place overall and displaying some great talent across all four activities. Sportsmanship and hard work were also highlighted among our athletes. It was awesome seeing many St Hilda’s girls in their blazers supporting teams for various finals. Winter Tournament Week along with Secondary Schools Finals have been extremely exciting. Well done to all the competitive and social sports teams for their commitment and hard work this season.

An exciting event that was held this term was Swimming Sports. We have not been able to hold a St Hilda’s Swimming Sports since 2019, so this was the first time for many students. We hoped to increase the house spirit through Year 10 cheerleading, positive interactions and participation. We loved seeing everyone in their house colours and enjoying some good old friendly house rivalry.

We have continued providing our weekly workout classes to all students. We have enjoyed offering a range of different workouts that change weekly. As term four approaches and the warmer weather becomes more appealing, we will be starting up Walkie Talkies again. This is a lunchtime walking group that allows students an opportunity to bond with different year groups. Next term, we would also love to continue our ‘Queen of the Court’ lunchtime games for all juniors to participate in. We have had some great turnouts and seen many smiles which is very rewarding!

We are looking forward to summer sports starting up next term and we would like to wish everyone the best of luck for the coming season!

Badminton - Sienna Wright

Winter Quad was a great experience for our senior badminton team. With the message of inclusivity and a little bit of competitiveness, our team set out to play against the St Marg’s, Columba College and Craighead teams. We got 4th place, but had lots of fun competing against all of the experienced players. We can’t wait to play them again at Winter Quad next year. Team members include:

Captain: Tunmise Adebowale

Members: Sophie Hutchens, Madison Kaan, Belle King-Begg and Sienna Wright.

Well done to all the girls who competed in this competition.

Basketball - Laura Ring

With the season wrapping up, we have had some awesome results. The Senior A team finished third in the Premier Grade, just narrowly missing out on a spot in the finals with a close semi (going down by 3 to Taieri College). The Junior A team finished second against Columba. The girls also only lost by 3, showing great improvement from the start of the season.

Our Year 7&8 mini ball teams have been playing on Mondays. The Year 8 girls won the Year 8B grade which is an awesome achievement! The Year 7 team had a great final game, winning against Taieri. It’s not surprising that St Hilda’s has had such a strong representation in the Otago top level teams. Lastly, the social teams have had a great run this season. We’ve had lots of teams playing every Friday night which is great to see the basketball community at St Hilda’s continuing to grow.

Hockey - Ava Beens & Billie Crowe

St Hilda’s continued their great season of hockey having some extremely thrilling results, and even though now the season is over we have some exciting times ahead next year.

The First XI continued their season with a great finish. At the Quad tournament, they came away with the win against Craighead 3-0, Columba 3-0 and then a tie with St Margaret’s 1-1, winning the Quad tournament by goal difference. They continued their success with a tight win over Columba in the secondary school final 1-0, with Annabelle McKnight sneaking past their goalkeeper with 12 minutes to go.

At the Winter Tournament, St Hilda’s Second XI had a great time up in Ashburton, being unbeaten till the semi finals against Rolleston College where they lost 3-1. But they got the bronze medal against Papanui College, winning 2-1.

The First XI went to the Audrey Timlin Tournament up in Christchurch and were unbeaten throughout the entire tournament, beating Marlborough College in the final 4-1. This win against Marlborough College sets our place in the top tier Federation Tournament for 2023.

Throughout the grades, St Hilda’s continued with their impressive year having the Year 13 Senior Team winning the Division Three competition, and the Junior Colts winning the Division Two Competition.

The Year 9A, Junior B, as well as the Year 7/8 also had good years just being unlucky in some games towards the end of the season. The games throughout the year and season brought to light the numerous players coming through showing awesome skills and sportsmanship on and off the field.

Football - Sophie Wylie

The St Hilda's First XI Football team has had a very successful end to their season, making it to the final and taking the win! It was a great game but also a very close one. Sophie Wylie managed to score the one and only goal in the game and the excitement from everyone around was amazing. The end score was 1-0 to St Hilda's but Columba was very determined to take one back. Our team worked hard all game and didn’t give up once no matter how tired we were.

We took part in the South Island Secondary School Girls competition where there were 19 teams in the competition and our St Hilda's team managed to take 3rd place. This was a very fun experience for the team and really challenged us. We were very pleased with our result and we’re happy to be awarded with bronze. On behalf of the team, thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us. We really appreciate it. Also to the Year 13s thank you for being a great team for the last five years and what a way to end our St Hilda’s football careers.

Aerobics - Isabella Tierney

The New Zealand National Championships were held on the 17th and 18th of September in Invercargill at the ILT Stadium. We had 20 girls qualify for the National Championships and 19 girls head through to finals, which is an incredible effort from St Hilda’s.

It was a very successful competition and a great way to finish off the year, another congratulations to everyone who competed.

Netball - Bernice Cullen

The netball season is almost over for St Hilda’s. The Senior A team had a very successful SISS tournament placing 4th, which means qualification for the NZSS tournament in Porirua in the 2nd week of the holidays. This is a huge achievement for the team as there will be only 16 teams from across New Zealand competing for the NZ title.

The Senior B team finished the season off with a thrilling game against Physed in the Senior 1 Grade Final. They sadly didn't get the win, but should be so proud of their efforts to come so close to making Prem C for 2023.

In junior netball, we had several teams who achieved highly this season. The 10A team placed 2nd in the Premier Junior Secondary School Grade, with a narrow loss to Otago Girls. The young Year 9A team also placed 5th in this same grade. In the Year 10 grade our SHCS Force team came out on top, with a win over the Taieri team. The SHCS Magic placed 2nd in the Year 9 grade, with a hard-fought loss against the Queens High School 9A team.

We also had many girls named in the DNC U14, U16, and U18 representative teams, who trained and played games. The U18 team went off to nationals and placed 9th.

Trapshooting - Rosa Smith

St Hilda’s trapshooting has been going great this term, with amazing results coming from many different competitions throughout the term. This includes Rosa Smith getting first in the Ladies Point Score at the Wanaka Intercollegiate competition, and with nationals coming up at the beginning of October we are getting very excited.

It’s been so good to have more new girls join us throughout the season and more are always welcome. We’ve even had girls start training in skeet, which is something new that we haven’t had St Hilda’s girls do yet, hopefully next year we’ll have these students competing. Overall this year has been an exceptional year for St Hilda’s trapshooting and we are looking forward to nationals and what next year will bring.
