Perri Hore and Georgia Graham (l-r) by Rachael Parker

Summer Tournament Week

Rowing - Maadi Cup

An amazing week at Twizel for our rowing squad was had at Maadi Cup.  The weather was great, the atmosphere was fantastic and our squad put there heart and soul into every race.

Final results:

Bronze Medal: Georgia Graham and Perri Hore won Bronze in the U17 Coxless pairs oars race.  Having shot out of the gates and led for the majority of the race, they really put the pressure on the other schools.  Unfortunately they couldn't hold out Craighead and Rangi Ruru in the final 200m.  But a well deserved medal for the pair.

U15 Coxed Quad Sculls: Yvie Moore, Freya Whiteside, Rosa Herlihy, Lucy Horrell and Bonnie McGregor 11th

U16 Single Sculls: Georgia Graham 5th

U17 Coxed Quad Sculls: Lola Castles, Georgia Cockburn, Honor Garden, Esther Whiteside and Bonnie McGregor 7th, this group also competed in the U18 Quad Sculls and finished 12th.

U16 Coxed Quad Sculls: Bonnie Turner, Margot Erasmus, Kerah Alexander, Mika Robinson and Holly Chisholm 11th

U15 Double Sculls: Yvie Moore and Freya Whiteside 10th

South Island Satellite Volleyball Championships

Last week, the Senior A Volleyball team competed at the South Island Satellite Volleyball tournament in Christchurch. This is a tournament for teams not attending Nationals.  There was an increase number of teams so it was great to compete against other schools outside Otago. The team were placed into Div 2 and we dominated this section.  Having only dropped one set all tournament the girls faced Scots College in the final.  It started with intensity and pressure from Scots but our girls stayed calm and focused on each point and delivered quality serves.  St Hilda's coming home with the Gold medal in three straight sets. Thank you to Linh Ashton and Andrew Haigh for their support over the week.

South Island Secondary Schools' Water Polo

Congratulations to our Senior Water Polo group who finished 6th at this competition last week.  The team had a tough pool group having to face Marlborough and St Margaret's College.  They had incredible fight and grit to only go down 12-8 against St Margaret's College and they also held Marlborough to 0-0 score after the first quarter.  After pool stage, they faced Villa Maria and Christchurch Girls.

Thank you to Kyle, Val and Sharon for going away with the team.

Gillette Venus Cricket

Congratulations to our Cricket team on another stella performance and win in the Gillette Venus Bates Cup Final yesterday. Having played Otago Girls, Columba College and Wakatipu in the round games over Sunday/Monday, the team faced Otago Girls again in the final. Otago Girls batted strong in the first innings and finished 20 overs on 4/125. Heading into our batting innings our girls had to play a smart game to chase that total. Our Year 13 players of Ella Gibson and Hannah O'Connor showed their class and experience to get the team over the line in the 18th over. Ella finishing on 45 not out and Hannah on 48. This was a great way to finish the season and to qualify the team to another national tournament in December!

We also said goodbye and thank you to our amazing coach Kate Ebrahim, who after three plus years is moving back to Christchurch.

Achievements

I poked my nose into some preseason Netball over the weekend as many ANZ teams were here for a southern showdown.  It was great excitement to see four former students playing for Southern Steel and they are two sets of sisters!  Fantastic to see Grace and Ella Southby, Georgia and Kate Heffernan (injured) out on court together.
