Sport Achievements this Week

Equestrian (written by Katie Wilson)

As many of you may be aware I was lucky enough to recently have the opportunity to travel to France and train and compete in showjumping thanks to Lucy Olphert who organized the tour. This was an experience of a lifetime. We traveled through Paris, Bonniers, La Baule, and St Malo. We did most of our training at a stable in Bonniers with one of France's top show jumping course designers. Here we got to ride many different mounts and learned how to quickly adapt to each horse and different coaching techniques. We competed in La Baule which was an opportunity we could only have dreamed of, I ended up placing in the top 10 of 75 riders which was very exciting. We were very lucky to be able to watch and experience an international competition in Dinard, where we got to meet Olympic riders and rub shoulders with the world's top showjumping riders and even walk the 5* Grandprix course amongst them, this was one of many highlights of my trip. Of course, we were also able to do a bit of site seeing and experience the French culture! I can't wait to go back one day.

Cross Country

This week, Zara Geddes represented NZ in Australia at the 2022 Australian Cross Country Championships. After competing in the U18 individual race, Zara also was part of the U18 girls relay team, the team finished second and is bringing a silver medal home! Well done Zara.

Swimming

Last week, the annual, regional New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championships competition was held in the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatic centre in Auckland.

Both Charlotte Aburn and Eva Borkowski represented their club, Neptune Swimming Club, at the event and achieved great results for both themselves and the club relay teams that they were in. Eva was put into Neptune A relay team, and the Neptune A team earned 2 great podium placings for both of their races, and made a new Otago record for one of their relays (which was the women’s 4x50 m freestyle relay.) Eva also earned multiple placings in the women’s B and C final throughout her races, she also achieved many personal bests, and she also broke an Otago record for the women's 50 m fly for the 17-18 year old girls age group.

Charlotte was placed into the Neptune B relay team, and the Neptune B team placed 14th in the Women’s 4x50 m freestyle relay. Charlotte also achieved multiple great results, personal bests and a number of top placings in her age group.

Congratulations to both Charlotte and Eva for their excellent performances throughout the duration of the event. They have represented both their club and the school very well.

Snowboarding

Phoebe Robb competed in the Base NZ Treble Cone Mini Mountain freeride competition and won the Under 12 Girls division and the New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour event at Remarkables where she was the Under 14 Girls champion.  Congratulations Phoebe.

Tennis

Both Charlie Byers (16) and Mya Haigh (15) have been named in the Otago Senior Tennis team to play in this weekends South Island teams event being held in Christchurch, they are the youngest 2 players in the team at 16 and 15 respectively and had to have dispensation from the other regions to allow for players under 16 to be selected for play.  All the best for the tournament.
