Library News

After such an eventful term I hope all of you are able to rest and relax with your families. When I was in school (these many, many years ago) my family used to drive from Vermont to Florida for spring break. It was always a relief to see the sun after a long Vermont winter! As there were four children in my family the long car trips could be challenging, but listening to audiobooks together made the time go fast. I thought this week I would include some audiobooks from our platform in case you are planning a car trip over the next two weeks.

The Hogwarts Library Collection: This includes Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. All of the Harry Potter books make for great family listening (and you can find them on our platform!) but this collection might be something new for those families who have read the other books many times before.

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson: I really enjoyed this mystery. It is set at a boarding school in Vermont, and I can testify that Johnson captures the bleakness of the cold Northeast woods! The heroine is a teenage true-crime fan who goes to the school specifically to solve a famous crime that took place there years ago. Of course, she soon gets drawn into a modern mystery as well. (Note that the recommended age for this one starts at thirteen, so it might not be ideal if you have younger siblings in the car.)

Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods by Rick Riordan: Percy tells his version of famous Greek myths! Readers who have experience with Riordan’s world and characters would like this one, but it could also be used to draw in reluctant readers who could then go on to read Percy’s original stories (start with The Lightning Thief) or explore more about Greek mythology.

Revisit a classic and check out Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, The Twits, or another hilarious Roald Dahl title!

Wonder by R.J. Palacio: This is one of the most popular and well-loved books in our library. Listening to Auggie’s story as a family could open up some amazing discussions about acceptance, resilience, and friendship. (Just make sure you have tissues ready to hand over to the driver at key moments.)

I wish you all an amazing holiday and I look forward to seeing you back in the library next term! Carrie Bouffard
