The Infants c.1925 by Isla Huffadine

When St Hilda's was founded in 1896 it took girls of all school ages, and as the school grew in numbers, so too did the Kindergarten and Primary parts of the school. And not only were these classes limited to girls, but early photos show that boys were also enrolled. The boys, however, left when they have completed Primer 4, often going on to John McGlashan.

Over the years the Primary School numbers varied. Records show that in the 1950s about 20 pupils were in Primer 1,2 3 and 4, but in the 1960s numbers declined and the Primary School was finally closed in 1967, much to the disappointment of many families.

As a result of having the Primary School, many girls who enrolled at the age of 5. and then went on to complete their primary and secondary education at St Hilda's, spent 10 or more years here. These students have much to remember and are a valuable resource in the history of the school.

Many of these “long stay” students are still around, and the Archival staff are currently drawing up a database of names, and obtaining personal reminiscences from these old girls about their days at St Hilda's. Their reminiscences will provide a very important chapter in the history of St Hilda's.
