Independent Learning Time

Independent Learning Time (iTime) for Term 1 - Thursday 8th April.

At the end of 2020 we looked at ways we could provide opportunities to build independent learning skills and provide an aspect of the flexibility that came through from the students as something they really valued during online learning. We were interested in finding ways to maximise the benefits of being able to prioritise their time and the work that needs to be completed within the school structure.

As a starting point we set aside two days at the end of 2020 for i Time where teachers of the classes the students had on that day set work that could be completed independently. This work was set up in class earlier in the week.

They had the flexibility to manage when and where (in a limited number of spaces within the school) they completed the day’s work.

Following these days we got feedback from both staff and students to inform our next steps in developing opportunities for flexibility in our learning environment.

The independent learning time (iTime) for term 1 will be on Thursday 8th April (Periods 3,4 & 5) Period 1 and 2 will be as normal with iTime starting at the beginning of interval.

For the i Time teachers of the classes students have on that day will set work that can be completed independently. This work will be set up in class earlier in the week.

For this work teachers will indicate the:

Must Do

Should Do

Could Do

This will give students clear expectations of what is expected - (teachers will not set more work than a student would normally be expected to cover in one class)

During the timetabled class the teacher will be available to meet with them - this could be done online or in person, small groups or individuals. This will need to be worked out with the teacher.

Students will have the flexibility to manage when and where within allocated spaces, they complete the half day’s work. Year 13 will have the option of working at school or at home/hostel.
