Next week we have Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday and we have been looking at what this means. For me the opportunity and gift of Lent is to encourage us all to spend some time reevaluating what we hold as important in our lives and what we need to do to achieve and nurture these things. It is also about introspection and about connecting with others and how being part of a community helps us to discover the things we value. The lovely greeting we all got as we arrived at school on Tuesday (Valentine's Day) reminded me of how special it is to be a part of the St Hilda's community.
Taking time to consider the treasures that are most important and setting goals of how to find and achieve these things also involves accepting that sometimes there are things that we cannot control. When I was considering these ideas I was also watching the terrible devastation that Cyclone Gabrielle has wrought in the north Island. The people there are faced with huge loss and will need to start the long process of rebuilding. I am sure that the communities most affected by this disaster are having to deal with how to move forward and the enormous task of what is required to rebuild.
We are looking at possible ways we as a school can support them in this.
