St Hilda's Collegiate School

Dear Parents and Caregivers

“If we will be quiet and ready enough, we shall find compensation in every disappointment.”

Henry David Thoreau

I know that the learning landscape is very different for us all at the moment, and I am also aware that it may not go back to what it was. Whatever and however it looks when we are all back to school again, we will need to make the most of the opportunities that present themselves and focus on what we have, rather than what we have lost. Hard to do I know, and as we plan for the coming months, it is tough not to be disappointed with the cancellation and postponement of so many events and activities that add such richness and joy to all our lives.

At this stage it is difficult to look too far ahead with any certainty, but we have had to make decisions, or others have made them for us, about some events. Please note this is not the total list, but the main school events coming up in the next few weeks. As we get more information and direction from the Ministry of Education we will be able to make more informed decisions.

Postponements:

SHCS Senior Formal – postponed until late July

Boarders Country Visits - postponed until late June – dates to be confirmed

Yr 12 Geography trip to Mt Cook

All NZSS Sanctioned sports events suspended until the 5th May.

Cancellations:

SHCS Production

Big Sing

SHCS Cross Country

SHCS Boarders Open Day

Otago Secondary Schools Music festival

Otago Careers Expo

As a school we are committed to ensuring as many of the scheduled events in later months will go ahead. We know and appreciate the contribution the co-curricular programme makes to the lives of our girls, we value the opportunities to extend learning beyond the classroom, and as a community we acknowledge the importance of those special events, activities, get togethers and impromptu moments that enrich the tapestry of school life and create such wonderful memories. We are already thinking about ways we can recreate those experiences and activities for our girls, while staying within the government mandated COVID19 Alert levels and requirements.

There will be new and fun ways of preserving all that we cherish and as a community the opportunities are boundless.
