Chapel Matters

This week we commissioned the new Prefects! This is always our first chapel of the year and it sets out many things that are important to us – servant leadership, tradition, and trust in God for all that we do. Dean Tony Curtis blessed the rings and badges, and spoke about how these are symbols for the kind of leadership we need today – leadership that shines a light into the darkness of our world, with all its uncertainty and challenge. Dean Tony quoted Amanda Gorman’s poem from the US Presidential Inauguration where she asked:

“When day comes, we ask ourselves where can we find light in this never-ending shade?”

In her moving performance (which you can watch here, if you haven’t seen it already) she concludes:

“When day comes, we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid.

The new dawn blooms as we free it.

For there is always light,

if only we’re brave enough to see it.

If only we’re brave enough to be it.”

Dean Tony reminded us all that God is light, and that with God’s help (as the Prefects declare in their Commissioning), we can do this!
