Otago Secondary School Netball Championships

The Otago Secondary Schools Netball Championships were held last weekend here in Dunedin. St Hilda's had four teams compete, 9A, 10A, Senior A & B. With the championships not held last year, it was great to see it back on the calendar - providing a chance to play teams from schools around Otago.

After the first day, all SHCS teams lead the pool rounds and headed into quarter and semi finals in the morning. It was going to be a great second day. The Senior A team had an early start with a game at 8.30am against Waitaki girls, but the cold didn't seem to matter and the team took the win!  The semi final game vs Taieri Senior A (who we had played in pool play), was a tighter battle. The girls managed to extended the lead and finish with a score of 42-28. The final against Otago Girls High School was neck and neck for most the game. Our SHCS team seemed to be on top throughout the last quarter, but OGHS crept back towards the end. Final result 39-35 to St Hilda's.

The Senior B team had a relatively easy pool play on day one and expected the semi and final to be tightly contested. However, in both games the Senior B's built good pressure and extended the leads. They won the Senior B section against Dunstan 51-23.

10A & 9A both had close semi finals. The 10A won against Waitaki, 24-20 and 9A won against Dunstan, 22-17.  Heading into the final, our 10's were playing Columba.  Having played them on the same weekend in normal Saturday competition, the girls were familiar with the opposition. Unfortunately our girls couldn't keep up with the Columba team, going down 41-14.  The 9A played Otago Girls in the final and despite a great effort from our girls, we went down 20-37. It was an amazing achievement to have all four teams place 1st or 2nd in Otago. A big thank you for our coaching/management group and to all the supporters that came down to watch.
