Library News

This week I will be highlighting some books about travel as the winter weather is making many of us dream of getting on a plane bound for someplace warm!

Audiobook of the Week:

13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson

“Ginny Blackstone never thought she’d spend her summer vacation backpacking across Europe. But that was before she received the first little blue envelope from Aunt Peg.

This letter was different from Peg’s usual letters for two reasons:

1. Peg had been dead for three months.

2. The letter included $1000 cash for a passport and a plane ticket.

Armed with instructions for how to retrieve twelve other letters Peg wrote—twelve letters that tell Ginny where she needs to go and what she needs to do when she gets there—Ginny quickly finds herself swept away in her first real adventure. Traveling from London to Edinburgh to Amsterdam and beyond, Ginny begins to uncover stories from her aunt’s past and discover who Peg really was. But the most surprising thing Ginny learns isn’t about Peg . . . it’s about herself.

Everything about Ginny will change this summer, and it’s all because of the 13 little blue envelopes.”

eBook of the Week:

City of the Beasts by Isabel Allende

“When Alexander Cold's mother falls ill, the fifteen-year-old is sent to stay with his eccentric grandmother in New York. A tough and prickly magazine reporter, Kate Cold takes Alex along with her on an expedition to the Amazon to verify the existence of the fierce, gigantic, legendary creature known as the Beast. Joining them on their adventure are a celebrated anthropologist; a local guide and his daughter, Nadia; a doctor; and a local entrepreneur. But not everyone's intentions are pure—and dangerous discoveries await Alex and Nadia as they embark, with the aid of a jungle shaman, on an epic journey into the realm of the mythical Beasts of the Amazon.”

Print Book of the Week:

Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean

“Izumi Tanaka has never really felt like she fit in―it isn’t easy being Japanese American in her small, mostly white, northern California town. Raised by a single mother, it’s always been Izumi―or Izzy, because “It’s easier this way”―and her mom against the world. But then Izumi discovers a clue to her previously unknown father’s identity…and he’s none other than the Crown Prince of Japan. Which means outspoken, irreverent Izzy is literally a princess.

In a whirlwind, Izumi travels to Japan to meet the father she never knew and discover the country she always dreamed of. But being a princess isn’t all ball gowns and tiaras. There are conniving cousins, a hungry press, a scowling but handsome bodyguard who just might be her soulmate, and thousands of years of tradition and customs to learn practically overnight.

Izumi soon finds herself caught between worlds, and between versions of herself―back home, she was never “American” enough, and in Japan, she must prove she’s “Japanese” enough. Will Izumi crumble under the weight of the crown, or will she live out her fairy tale, happily ever after?”

This one is brand new (and Tilly-approved)!

Our Read With PRIDE! event is running until the end of June and it has been great to see the entries coming in!

Here's a reminder of how students can enter:

  • Read a book with an LGBTQIA+ character or theme.

  • Write their name, the title of the book, and a one sentence (or longer!) review on a piece of paper and put it in the box near the dinosaurs.

Students can find a list of rainbow books in our library catalogue here to get them started, and some of these titles will be available as eBooks or Audiobooks, so they can take a look at our Wheelers platform as well! Out on the Shelves also has lists of books here if they are looking for more titles.

The event runs until the end of June and they can read as many books and enter as many times as they like. Open to both staff and students (parents and caregivers are also very welcome if you would like to participate)!

Happy Reading! Carrie Bouffard
