Year 8-9 Transition to Nayland College

Kirsten Mannix —

By using the same procedure as the Year 6-7 transition project, the AST team collected information from the many stakeholders involved in the transition process to give recommendations on how to strengthen these practices across our Kāhui Ako.

Last year the AST team started their voice collection of Year 8 ākonga and their whānau to gauge their thoughts on their future move to Nayland College. Surveys were sent to Broadgreen kaiako, support staff, SLT, SENCO, and RTLB to gain their valuable insight.

After transition had been made to Nayland College, the new Year 9 students and their whānau were asked to give their feedback on how the transition process was experienced by them. Surveys were then sent out to Nayland College kaiako, SLT, and support staff. All voice collected followed the protocols outlined for RBL Voice Collection. Once all data had been collated, sentiments were written to illustrate what the data was saying. Recommendations were then written based on the data and suggestions. Prior to sharing with Nayland College, this was moderated by the AST team.

Based on the collective voices and sentiments the Kāhui Ako Across School Team have made these recommendations;

  • A clear system for sharing data about student’s learning, behaviour and health needs to developed, shared and accessed for all staff

  • A visual cue/graphic that clearly explain expectations for learners at Nayland College for tauira, kaiako and whānau would provide clarity

  • There are ideas and opportunities for greater collaboration between the two schools that can be developed and extended

The Kāhui Ako team are available and willing to support and implement any changes if requested.

This project has, and will continue to be, a labour of love. Ngā mihi to all who shared their voice and have been part of the process.
