Growing coaching conversations

Kirsten Mannix —

"... a one-to-one conversation that focuses on the enhancement of learning and development through increasing self-awareness and a sense of personal responsibility, where the coach facilitates the self-directed learning of the coachee through questioning, active listening, and appropriate challenge in a supportive and encouraging environment." Professor Christian van Nieuwerburgh, 2012

As a follow-up to the Kāhui Across School Teachers attending a Growth Coaching course in Auckland, a hui was held at Broadgreen Intermediate School with the Within School Teachers to help grow their skills in coaching.

Having a kete of questions to use is invaluable as these enable our impact coaches to strengthen their coaching.  The key part of our impact coaching cycle is the goal setting and reflection that happens in the conversation.  By continuing to grow our coaches by giving them a variety of skills and strategies, more successful coaching conversations will be had.

So far the WST's have experienced the impact of using agentic questioning and a framework to help a teacher reach a positive outcome focused goal.

Feedback from those who attended was very positive.  Your 2023 AST team will continue to provide opportunities to further develop these skills.
