An Amazing Race

Kirsten Mannix —

Learning about our local area and history in a practical and fun context.

As part of the Inquiry topic, Aotearoa, students in Room 8 at Broadgreen Intermediate School took part in an Amazing Race around Whakatū on Friday 1 December, visiting seventeen different locations of historical significance.  These locations were spread from Maara Wheke (Octopus Park in Stoke) to Whakapuaka Cemetery.  Students also visited places of significance to tangata whenua such as Paruparu Estuary, Matangi Awhio and Te Punawai Pā site.  For each location completed, students received a word that created a seventeen word phrase.  Highlights were being invited up into Fifeshire house to record for The Breeze and frollicking around Broadgreen gardens!

A huge ngā mihi to the whānau who helped out.

"Awesome day full of activities.  We learnt lots about the history of Nelson."
"It really helped me connect with the people in my group and get to know them better.  I've always gone past these places and not known what they are.  Now I actually know what they are."
"This taught us about the history of our community and I learned a lot about places we went to."
