The Importance of Attending School
School attendance is the most crucial prerequisite for quality education. Students cannot learn if they are not in school.
We wish to stress the importance of your child attending school regularly, as every day counts. As a school, we know this to be true and monitor attendance rates of all students twice a term - Week 5 and Week 10. If we are concerned about your child’s attendance, we will make contact with you. We will work together with you to ensure your child attends school regularly. Where appropriate, referrals may be made to external agencies to support students achieving regular attendance.
Should you need help in ensuring your child comes to school please contact your child’s teacher and/or a member of the Senior Leadership Team - Lorene Hurd, Jane Sharpe or Helen Rennie-Younger.
8:30 - 8:45 am Drop Off
No drop off before 8:30 am. Class begins at 8:55 am
Students arriving after 9:00 am must sign in at the office before going to class.
● Walking to school is proven to be the healthiest option and reduces traffic congestion.
● Once your child is settled into school life, we encourage you to drop your child at one of the three entrances to school; Ellen Ave, Northgrove Ave or the front entrance on Sunnybrae Road, and walk independently to their classroom.
● The bus bay at the front entrance is a Stop, Drop and Go Zone only. No parking, please. Please stay in your car so you can exit promptly.
● Please respect our neighbours by not parking in driveways or blocking access to residents' homes. Parking at the shops on Sunnybrae Road is limited, and parking tickets could be issued by Auckland Transport if you exceed the time limit in the shop parking area.
The Importance of Arriving On Time
As a parent or caregiver, you may think that a few minutes late here and there won't affect your child; however, over the course of a term, this time adds up to them missing a significant amount of school.
Arriving after 9:00 am means your child has missed the usual morning routines, which include settling into the classroom environment for the day's learning.
A very important part of the morning is when the teacher reads the Daily Notices to their students. This ensures all students are kept up to date with what is happening at school. This is when they are asked to join sports teams or to get involved in extracurricular activities within the school. Their late arrival can also have a disruptive effect on the rest of the classroom.
Additionally, arriving late can make some students anxious about entering a classroom where others are already engaged in their classwork, as they may feel self-conscious or out of place. This can impact their focus and ability to catch up with the ongoing lesson.
Late arrival data is also monitored in Weeks 5 and 10 of each Term. If there is a reason that your child is regularly late and you need assistance in getting your child to school on time, please contact your child’s teacher and/or a member of the Senior Leadership Team - Lorene Hurd, Jane Sharpe or Helen Rennie-Younger.
3:00 pm Pick Up
Contact the School Office before 3:00 pm if you will be late.
Children regularly collected after 3:10 pm will be sent to the YMCA After School Care in the School Hall (at parent's expense) as our Office Staff are unavailable to supervise students.
● Be on time to collect your child.
● Please do not take home another student unless you have contacted their parents to obtain permission.
● If you see a student who is not accompanied by a parent/caregiver just outside of our school grounds, and you are concerned, direct the student to return to the school office to wait for their parents to collect them. You may wish to walk the student back to the office. The Office Staff will then call their parents. It would be most helpful if all students knew at least one parent's phone number or had the number(s) written down and stored in their school bag in case of these situations.
● Ensure your child knows what gate they will be picked up from and by whom.
● If your child attends the YMCA, please clarify with them each morning if they will be attending After School Care or not.
● If you have booked your child into the YMCA After School Care, but you decide to collect your child personally, please let the YMCA know in advance.
● If there are any changes to pick up plans during the day, please call the office on 09 443 5058. Thank you.
