Science Week in Atawhai

Chauntelle Evans —

Recently we celebrated science week in Atawhai. Each Kaiako provided an amazing learning experience for the tamariki. Rebecca used the rain water to help us learn about floating and sinking. Jess demonstrated that you can pour warm water over jelly beans and skittles, they can make a rainbow. Jess also made some really cool displays in the library window, so check it out. Tracy was curious to find out if salt can actually melt ice. She had some blocks of ice and we put dye and salt onto it to see if it would melt. Katrina taught us about friction. We learned that when we rub balloons on our hair or jerseys, we can pick up paper and cellophane. Courtney made milk move with dishwashing liquid and dye. We solved a solar system puzzle with Chauntelle, and watched mould grow. Trish showed us that clouds move and can be different shapes. We also learned how the clouds get rain in them and why the rivers near us flooded recently. It was such a fascinating week and we hope to have more in the future
