Tahuna Yr8 Boys Team achieves First Place in Technology, Science and Engineering EPro8 Challenge.

Liza Whitson —

Tahuna Normal Intermediate was the destination for Dunedin schools to participate in the Technology, Science and Engineering EPro8 Challenge on Thursday 26th July and Friday 27th July.

There were teams of children representing their schools from Tahuna, Kavanagh College, DNI, KVC and Columba College.

Bill Boyes organised 4 teams of Tahuna pupils to be involved in the Technology, Science and Engineering EPro8 Challenge.  The event involves  2 1/2hours to earn points by completing science, technology and engineering challenges.

Well done to the year 8 boys who won the event and also to the year 7 girls placing 8th out of 12 teams.

Each team can only do one challenge at a time or they can complete parts of a challenge to reach the criteria which they then get judged on and awarded points.

Challenges included assembling a solar powered alarm that had to wake up a character and tip him out of bed if he went back to sleep. Or deliver his breakfast to him from 2 meters away. Another challenge was to make a flood proof kennel that had a water proof roof and a warning if the water level got to the floor level including a lockable door.

Problem solving situations, perseverance, team building, decision making, hands on building, communicating with others and being able to listen to others are just a few skills needed to meet these challenges.
