Literacy Circles in The Hub
Reading has come alive over the last few weeks with lots of deep and rich conversations as students together discuss and analyse their texts.
During our reading times our students have been working in groups reading a range of texts that support their science investigation work. These texts were mainly non-fiction, science related reports (which supported our science focus for the term).
Each member of each group was given a specific role for that days session. The roles were:
+ Leader - ensure everyone is organised, direct the discussion, change direction when necessary.
+ Clarifier - extend vocabulary by identifying new words and their meaning
+ Questioner - asking meaningful and open-ended questions
+ Predictor - Using clues in the text to make predictions about what they're reading.
+ Summariser - Summarising parts of the text or the whole text
The key to making this a success was for the students to generate rich discussion within their group to aid in their meaning making and the critical thinking aspects of being an effective reader.
It was a huge success in the Hub and we're thinking of keeping it going as part of our reading rotations.
Ask your child about their experience with literacy circles, the roles they've fulfilled and some of their insights.
