Cycle Skills!

Olivia Bates —

Room 5 have been out and about this week with the DCC bikes in school programme. The programme is made up of three main aspects and children have to demonstrate proficiency to the tutors in each grade to progress onto the next. Grade 1 – Preparing for on-road riding Grade 2 – Introduction to on-road riding Led rides – Introduction to independent riding on the road.

On the 26th of October it was a Dunner-stunner and Room 5 had their very first bike school lesson! We learnt loads of skills and things that will help you along the road and all throughout life. Then we all got our bikes and helmets and got into groups no bigger than ten people in each. We then set off in our groups and our instructors made us do all kinds of different things, like how to check tires to see how much air is in them, if there’s too much, too less or just right, how to check brakes, also how to fix your chain. I think the most important thing that they taught us was the bike ABCs (Air, Brakes, Chain). We are looking forward to getting out onto the road next week!
