Music at Tahuna

Roddy Scoles —

Mr Page reports on Music this term at Tahuna.

Musically speaking, 2108 has been a huge time at Tahuna. Our budding Ukulelists had the opportunity to join in the Ed Sheeran Uke jam in the Octagon early in the year, and the annual multi-school Uke Jam organised by the fantastic crew in the St Clair School music dept, hosted here at Tahuna. This year we had 1,000 young Ukulelists between the two mornings.

The event was a huge success and a great time was had by all.

Tahuna has a huge band scene that is going from strength to strength. There are 10 active bands currently at Tahuna, with an average membership of 6 per band that means 1 in 9 Tahuna pupils is involved in a band! Four of our Tahuna bands entered the Rockshop Bandquest last month, performing creditably against a tough field, demonstrating innovation and spirit. Our vocal based three piece Fernando took 3rd place overall and Best Vocals.

A number of year 7 bands are already thinking about next year’s competition, which will spur them on to practise, achieve, and express.

Being in a band is a great way to focus musical efforts, learn to play collaboratively with others, and encourages valuable practise. This is also having a flow-on effect, inspiring many of their friends to take up instruments. If your pupil would like to learn a band or Orchestral instrument tell them to come and see me in the Music Room, we have some amazing Itinerant music teachers in a variety of instruments.
