Learning te reo Māori in 19A

Sean Minhinnick —

A focus at Tahuna is to develop our knowledge and use of te reo in the school, at home and in the wider community. Every week there are a range of activities to support this.

During term 1 in the Hub we’ve been learning Māori greetings. Each week we develop our te reo skills with a number of  activities. The focuses so far have involved learning of Māori greetings, te reo for feelings, we sometimes involve colours in our activities as well.

A recent activity I really enjoyed was a Māori translation puzzle, it was made up of several triangles to make one big triangle. What you had to do was match up the Māori and English meanings, for example you could match whero and red or ngenge and tired.

I believe learning te reo is very important for all New Zealanders and I enjoy having the opportunities to develop my knowledge of the language at Tahuna.
