Room 9 Scientists!

Jess Cooper —

Last term, Room 9 students got lit on fire and turned into crazy scientists, conducting some exciting experiments!

Last term Room 9 learnt all about density, chemical reactions, the periodic table and much more during their science topic!

We were lucky enough to have Dr Dave from the University of Otago come in to take us for three sessions. We completed a density experiment, played with dry ice, learnt how to measure chemicals, and lit our hands on fire (not literally...).

Then, in class we got to make ice-cream! We did this by putting milk, sugar, vanilla essence, and flavour in a small bag. We then put ice and rock salt in a big bag and the small bag of mixture inside. We had to shake it for approximately 10 minutes until the liquid turned into a solid - it was freezing! How does this work you ask? Adding the salt, lowers the freezing temperature of the ice/melted water. For our ice cream, it allows the temperature of the mixture around the ice cream to get colder and turn it into a solid. The result: delicious!!
