KORFBALL at Tahuna

Kelsey Brocklebank —

Korfball is a sport not many Kiwis would have heard of, or even known had existed. Over the past 4 weeks for PE, Tahuna students have had the opportunity to get involved in this new sport, assisted by expert coach, Manon Wiegerink (who has come all the way from the Netherlands no less!).

Korfball originates from the Netherlands and is similar to netball/basketball but with a lot of differences too. Namely the hoop (a lot higher) and the fact you play mixed gender. You are allowed as close to your opposing player as you can get without touching them or the ball. You are not allowed to shoot if your defender is an arm length away from you, so you need to work fast and make quick decisions on the court.

Some Room 7 students thoughts about Korfball:

Dallas: I liked learning a new sport and the techniques that go with it.

William: Its really fun, the hoops are really high which I like and you can't dribble which makes it challenging.

Taya: I like how its a mix of what I've already played but with some new things alongside.

A huge thank you to Manon for coaching, we have learned a lot and hope she enjoyed her time here as well.
