Welcome to the 100km challenge!

Sean Minhinnick —

Our maths focus currently is investigating length, area and perimeter. These key concepts have been integrated into our class fitness programme.

As is often the case some students can struggle with having a deep understanding of the difference between a shape's perimeter and its area. In class we discussed the shape of the block around Tahuna, it was measured and we found the perimeter and the area in square metres. I was looking for an activity that supported this learning and also linked to fitness with a medium term goal for all of the students to achieve at their own pace.

The Hub have got themselves into groups of three and have set up data tracking tables in their maths books dedicated where they update their data after each run. The winning group will take away a mystery prize!

Not only after completing this challenge will they have a clear understanding of what perimeter is and how to run it, but we're expecting quicker times in the block run assessment at the end of the term.

Every step is a step closer to the goal, gaining fitness and reinforcing mathematical concepts.
