Current Flag Vs New Flag - What's Your Opinion?

Salote Rouvi —

Students in Room 9 write their own 'Matters of Opinion' during Reading.

As part of our Reading Rotation in Room 9, the students were asked to read through the main article in the Matter of Opinion section of this month's Extra Newspaper. The hot topic was of course the changing of the New Zealand Flag.

Once completed, Room 9 students had a go at writing their own. Debates were strong and the students were happy to voice their strong opinions through their writing on this great topic. Emotions were charged with both sides of the debate being represented.

Here is an example of what was produced.

The Flag Debate

In my opinion New Zealand should remain with the current flag, Why? 28 million is a lot of money. With New Zealand having a big poverty rate, couldn't we spend it on useful resources? Also New Zealand soldiers have worn the New Zealand flag on their uniforms as war veterans proudly. John Key is currently on his last term of Prime Minister so it seems he could be changing the flag to make his mark on New Zealand.

Another topic discussed in this months Extra was asking people to question whether Dance was actually a Sport or not. Again we had both views represented. Here is an example.

Is Dance a Sport?

Dance is a sport. It has competitions against other dance groups and schools. If you think about it, Dance is like the word Sport. There are many Dances like there are many Sports. There is Hip Hop, Ballet, Jazz and many more. It is exercise and if you work really hard at it, you succeed well. I strongly believe that Dance is a Sport. It also goes on all around the world.
