Getting ready for Science Fair!

Olivia Bates —

Some very unusual things happen when you mix a little milk, food coloring, and a drop of dish detergent!

Room 5 has had some fun this week exploring some science experiments. We discussed as a class the importance of a method for an experiment to work.

On Thursday we were doing a science experiment and we filled the bowl a quarter full with milk. We then put a drop of red, yellow, green and blue food dye in it. After that, we put a drop of dish soap on a cotton swab and put that in the milk. All the colours moved away from the swab and swirled.

See milk is mostly water based with some chemicals here and there, the fat in the milk has bonded with the other chemicals and is very sensitive to other chemicals that happen to enter the milk. Meaning when something unrelated to the chemicals in milk it enters the liquid the fat separates. From my knowledge the food colouring doesn't have a part in the reaction and is simply there so you can see it happen.
