TAHUNA PASIFIKA

Yvonne Toa —

This year Tahuna entered 3 Pasifika groups where each island was celebrated and fully embraced by the performers at practice and on the night of Polyfest.

Our Samoan group was tutored by Sandra Mata'afa and brother Michael who have assisted with the group since its inception 21 years ago.  They set high standards of performance and the students rise accordingly to showcase a multitude of skills and talent.

Mrs Keni Moeroa helped found the Cook Island group 22 years ago and it is wonderful to have her wisdom and support as she has now transitioned daughters Sellina and Christiana into taking on the tutoring role.  Again the items were superb and the hours put into additional costuming was also appreciated.  Another amazing cultural experience for the performers.

For the first time at Tahuna, we entered a Tongan item.   Mr 'Aluesi tutored a group of boys at lunchtime in performing a traditional Tongan war dance.  It wasn't easy mastering the dance, keeping on the headgear and showing expertise with a spear, but the boys did their best and the item was very well received.

So thanks again to our outstanding tutors, performers and staff / College teachers who have helped throughout the journey  to Polyfest.  The students involved are definitely all the more richer from their involvement in each of these groups.
