Geo Tech Team 4 take some time to sit on a fault line at Brighton Beach.

Last week Teams 3 and 4 went on some amazing field trips around Dunedin. The teams stopped at Rotary Park lookout to see the remains of the Dunedin Volcano which was active 13 million years ago. From here they went to Second Beach to look at basalt columns formed from lava flows that occurred whilst the volcano was still under water!

The next stop was Brighton Beach to look at Otago schist and an actual fault line. Students were able to get up close and hands on. The students explored various areas of the schist and fault line whilst collecting rock samples to take back to school for a closer look.

Back at school we looked at what had caused the Dunedin volcano and other volcanoes in New Zealand.

The field trips were a great experience for students to see real life geological formations on their doorstep. Many had not been to the various sites or thought of how they came to be.
