Room 19's time on camp

Cole Gibbons. Chelsea Saunders —

Room 19 went to Camp Tirohanga in Week 7, here are two students recounts of what we got up to at camp.

I woke up on camp day and shot out of bed into the car and then to school. All of my classmates were excited, it sounded like a zoo.

On the bus it was loud. The class was singing funny songs and clapping their hands. After a while we arrived at Outram Glen and started our tramp. The leaves were crunching when we were walking. It was a long tramp in the bush. When we got to the end we had lunch, skimmed some stones and walked back to the bus.

Eventually we got to camp, unloaded the bus and went to for a boundary walk which was confusing. The day had gone so quick. It was already dinner time, we had to make Nachos. Our one was a little cold and disgusting. Mr J arrived at camp and played some awesome games with us. It was raining heavily, non stop. Later that night we got a visit from Liam Coltman, a Highlander. We asked him questions about his job and what it was like being a Highlander. When it got dark Mr J and Mrs Coltman took us to see the Glow Worms, they were cool.

We woke up on Tuesday morning to rain, terrible cold rain. I had a shower that lasted about 5 seconds, it was freezing! We went on this steep walk in the forest. Half way up we made huts and our one was voted the best one. We walked for about an hour in the wet and cold. Back at camp, we got changed into warm clothes and played games all afternoon. For dinner we made burgers. That night I had to go home because I had the Triathlon the next day.

Our class go to school in their mufti clothes and packed their gear onto the bus. On the way to camp we stopped and did a tramp to a rock garden and back, which was challenging. I felt relieved when it was over. When we arrived at camp Chopper showed us the boundaries, and then we set up our tents. For dinner we cooked nachos in our cooking group, then went to see the glow worms with Mr J.

In the morning we went on another tramp, it was mostly uphill. It was very challenging but a good feeling when it was finished. In the middle of the tramp we built shelters in our house groups because our ‘plane crashed and rolled down the hill.’

For dinner that day we had a burger and chips, which we presented nicely for our little masterchef competition. At bedtime we settled into our cabins, chatted for a bit and then went to sleep.

In the morning we made our pancakes and then packed up our stuff. We did a scavenger hunt in groups, and when we finished the bus had arrived.

I really enjoyed my first camp at Tahuna. There were some things that I did that I found quite challenging. It was a fun experience, but it was good to be home.
