World Vision - Workshop and Assembly Talk

Late last week we were very lucky to once again have Emily from World Vision visit us at Tahuna. Emily is a Youth Ambassador for World Vision and was back at Tahuna for the second year running.

Just a couple of weeks after four members of the Tahuna School Council had spent a day at the World Vision Junior Youth Conference, Emily made two visits to Tahuna.

On Thursday of last week, Emily ran a workshop for school councillors. The workshop explained some of the work done by World Vision and it also focused on helping councillors prepare to run this year's 40 Hour Challenge (formerly the 40 Hour Famine).

Then, on Friday, Emily returned to speak to the whole school at assembly. Her talk focused on the importance of access to clean water and the role which World Vision plays in addressing this issue. Emily spoke about the 40 Hour Challenge and how it plays a vital role in World Vision's work.

We'll have a meeting soon at school for students to register interest in participating in this year's 40 Hour Challenge - letters with permission slips will be handed out at this meeting.

Finally, here are a few quotes from some of the school councillors who attended Emily's workshop:

Zoe: "I learnt that 800 people in the world die every day because they either have no water or the water is dirty.”

Lachy: “It was great - it gave us lots of great ideas for the 40 Hour Challenge.”

Harper: “When we flush the toilet one time, that’s about the same amount of water as some people in the world have for the whole day.”

Pippa: “I learnt that a lot of people in other parts of the world are less fortunate than we are in New Zealand.”

Chloe: “I learnt that children all over the world drink dirty water because they have no choice and clean water is too far away.”

Abi: “I learnt that we should be more careful with our water because a lot of countries aren’t as fortunate as us.”
