Tahuna's two award winning songwriters

Both Grace Gemmell (Room 16) and Emily-Rose Young (Room 5) entered a song in the New Zealand Music Month "Hook, Line and Singalong" competition, and both won!

Grace's very catchy and uplifting song "Sunday Afternoon" won Best Junior Song as well as a Top Five Award.

Emily-Rose Young won  the Te Reo Māori Award  with the lyrical and compelling “Tokuo Tatou Aotearoa”.

The guidelines in the Hook, Line and Singalong competition state: "The lyrics should reflect what it means to live in New Zealand", and it is striking the contrast between the two songs though they express a similar sentiment.

Both Grace and Emily-Rose accompany themselves with finesse and confidence, and both sing with an ease and fluidity that belies the challenges of stepping up to a microphone.

The Tahuna School community is extremely proud of you, Grace and Emily-Rose, and we applaud you from our living rooms.

The overall winner of the Hook, Line and Singalong songwriters' competition was “We are One” by Sophie Brown (Epsom Girls’ Grammar School).

As a lock-down bonus Emily-Rose has agreed to also let you in on her latest song - but first on the piano - "I'll Show You", which she has entered in the Peace Song Contest.
