Supporting your child's learning

Learning is not just limited to the hours a student is at school. Learning happens in a variety of ways and environments and whanau have a vital role to play.

Teachers are often asked by parents, 'how can we help at home?'

Be involved, ask your child how their day was, communicate with the classroom teacher, come to parent interviews.  Even if you believe your child to be tracking well, students really enjoy their parents being involved.

Reading

Play board games, puzzles, read recipes, magazines, newspaper; reading does not have to be in a book all the time, language is all around us; make it fun!!! Even at this age children still enjoy being read to, or read a page each together.

Writing

Play board games, crosswords, create a message board, use technology.  Get your child to write the shopping list while you dictate it, write a recipe or draft an email for you.  Again keep it simple and don't make it too onerous, as soon as it looks like hard work they will tune off.

Maths

Play board games, talk about prices of items, sale discounts, budgets, timetables and shapes.  Keep it positive around maths, children get a vibe - so if you have pre-conceived ideas around maths they will pick up on it.  Problem solve together, the earlier children are financially aware the better.

Remember supporting their learning isn't just about literacy and numeracy.  Get active with your children. Get creative and most importantly be involved in their learning journey.
