Year 8 News

Term 3 is looking to be an exciting term! Year 7 and 8 students will be working on producing our own Toitu styled history of Dunedin. All students will be visiting Toitu to look how they have been created. From here students will then investigate a part of Dunedin's history and try to retell this story in a number visual and oral ways. This project is our final stage in our He Kaitiaki Tatou - We are guardians where we will focus on being guardians of the past and look at Whakapapa me te whanaungatanga - how the past shapes who we are today – our familial links and bonds, our networks and connections, our sense of obligation, and the stories woven into our collective and diverse identities. Also Tūrangawaewae me te kaitiakitanga. This context focuses on the relationships of individuals, groups, and communities with the land, water, and resources, and on the history of contests over their control, use, and protection. As you can see there is a huge potential for our students to produce something special - come join us on this journey!

Later in the term Year 8 students will be involved in rock climbing. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in two sessions. One at Logan Park High using their climbing wall to learn climbing and safety skills. The second session will be Long Beach where students will put into practice the skills the have developed. This will challenge students and take them outside their comfort zone and has always been a main highlight of the year.

In the last two weeks of the term 5 Year 8 classes will be heading out to Waiora and Sutton for camp. This catches up those classes that missed out in Term 1 due to Covid. More details will be sent out by classroom teachers at the start of term 3.

Also happening in term 3 will be our open night on Tuesday 9th August. High schools will also be holding their open nights in term 3 as well. Please talk to your classroom teacher if you have any questions around your options for 2023!
