The weather tested us, the waves surely tested us, we tested ourselves and came up with the goods. This week of sun, sand, surf, rain, wind, cold, hot temperatures was a usual walk in the park stock standard week for our Tahuna students...or was it?

The term has started very positively with the beautiful autumn weather enabling students to enjoy the school grounds and playground facilities. All the school programmes are fully underway.

At 6am on the 25th of April, Josh Crowley, Grace Gemmell, and Rupert Lublow-Catty met at Queen's Gardens to join the ANZAC parade to the cenotaph for the Dawn service. Carrying the wreath and flag, they marched with pride and stood firm throughout the service, in very chilly conditions. When about to take a photo, several ex Tahuna students also attending, came over to chat with the trio.

The year 7 students have made art based on Māori designs and the Tahuna school value symbols using a variety of mediums.

As the season is getting colder, there have been the usual illnesses around. If your child is unwell, they must be kept away from school.

School is closed on Friday 3rd June for a Teacher Only Day.

Tahuna 1 placed 1st in the Otago Lit Quiz on Friday, securing a spot at the New Zealand Lit Quiz Nationals.

Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness. It’s about creating a community where all people feel safe, valued and respected, regardless of age, sex, gender identity, ability, or cultural background.

This popular trip to Coronet Peak is booked in for the first weekend of next Term. Friday 29th, Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July.

A celebration evening recognising students involved in the Arts at Tahuna was held in our school hall at the end of term one.The evening was successful, as students were well supported by whānau giving a real sense of community. Tahuna students showed their exceptional talents, dedication and pride contributing within the Arts at Tahuna. The evening involved haka, waiata and dance performances from Te Taiopeka, Marimba band, orchestra, trumpet musical pieces, original songs sung by Grace Gemmell as well as an introductory piano performance from Benji Egan and talented Cook Island performers. Whānau and friends also viewed the high standard of student art work on display, served finger food and treats baked and prepared by the students for family and friends. I would like to thank all staff, pupils and whānau who supported our students. This support contributed to the success of Tahuna’s first ‘Evening of the Arts’. We should all be proud of our Tahuna students!

The year has been going well with lots of keen students coming to The Specialist Classes, and in particular Hard Materials.

Tahuna has 12 netball teams this year which is fantastic! We are still looking for coaches for the following teams:8B, 8 Magic, 8 Tactix, 8 Diamonds and 7 White.

Tahuna provides a range of academic extension opportunities to extend students.

Term 2 is our annual science term. The Year 7's will be working on science fair projects at school and home throughout the term. Students will plan their experiment at school, carryout the experiment at home and work on the presentation at school. We have been doing some fun activities for homework to get us ready.
