Stewart Island Camp a Big Success!

All students were fantastic and a real credit to their families. Big thank you to Mrs McBride & Miss Jamieson for their help in making it such a a great way to finish the term.

In the last week of term three ,we went down to Stewart island as a part of the Tahuna Leadership Camp. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and we did lots of unique activities throughout the week. Visiting the Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary, beach combing, tramps and treasure hunts were all part of the plan for the action packed week. We did have down time though - which most of us used to play rugby or go fishing, play darts or just talk. At night, we would play spotlight or go kiwi spotting. Our favourite day of the week was Wednesday, when we went over to Ulva Island. We went round the island while Jen, our guide from DOC, talked about the history and bird life living on Ulva Island. The most common bird we noticed was the South Island Robin, or Toutouwai. The cheeky robins posed for cameras, interacting with us as we roamed the island.

We also did a tramp to Port William, roaming through the forest as birds flitted overhead. While walking on the track we came across several dead rats. Now as gross as that sounds it is actually quite a good thing, as Stewart Island is infested with rats. One time Mr. Scoles picked up one by the tail, took a picture with it then threw it at Jay.

As we missed out on fishing we got a water taxi back to Halfmoon bBy from Port William. On Thursday night Mr Scoles kindly took us out for dinner so we could try the blue cod we missed out on catching.

Stewart island is something I know I will never forget. We learnt lots about the wildlife, nature life and history of Stewart island while still having fun. Everybody had an amazing time, always having a smile on their faces.

Overall, Stewart island was a great experience, and we consider ourselves lucky to have shared such an experience with such amazing people. Mr Scoles, Mrs McBride and Miss Jamieson made the whole week a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and we feel lucky to have been chosen for such a memorable experience in the picturesque Stewart island.
