Exploring Instruments

Sarah Baird —

Kahitua have been exploring some instruments that we have at school, learning the names of the instruments and how to use them.

During Discovery time with Kuparu and Haku, we played a variety of percussion instruments. The castanets, xylophones, cymbals, triangle, tambourines, woodblock and maracas were some of the favourite options.

In class, Kahitua have been playing instruments to familiar songs and identifying whether it is a slow or fast beat.

The tamariki had fun discovering that the tambourines could be played using different parts of their body - the hand, shoulder, arm, leg - even the feet!

We tried the short and long xylophones. The xylophones  had the letters engraved on the tone plates and we could hear the difference between the high and the low notes.
