Spud in a bucket

John Kane —

Welcome to the 2018 edition of spud in a bucket. This an annual competition for pupils to grow a spud in a bucket to bring to Pets Day. On Pets Show Day the spuds will be weighed and the "Bucket" trophy will go the heaviest potato grown.

Potatoes will be given out tomorrow at morning tea by the School Garden. Buckets will not be provided. Please bring along your own container/bag to take your potato home in. If your child is not at school tomorrow, potatoes will be available from the school office.

There are only two rules for this competition; The potato provided must be the one used. Any other variety will be disqualified and the potatoes must be grown in a standard 9.6 litre round bucket.

Other than that you may use any 'secret blend' of grandad's compost etc that helps your potato to grow.

Please ensure that your name and year are written on the bucket so the judges can identify the winners.

Tips from past winners:

Make sure your bucket has holes in the bottom for drainage

Give your potato a head start by sprouting it inside before planting

Bring your bucket inside on cold days and nights at the start

Talk to your potato, tell it how your your hopes are for it!!!

Good luck

Michael and Annabel Bayley have kindly donated the seed potatoes for this. Thank you to them for their support of this event.
