Term 2 Week 1 News from Piwakawaka.
Fungai Mabonga - April 27, 2023
Wednesday news time was a highlight for most students as they all got to share their holiday adventures. Stories ranged from pig hunting to Nana visits plus lots more.
With memories of ANZAC Day still fresh in their minds, we dived into a discussion about the meaning and significance of the day. We read the book, 'The Dawn Parade' by Phillipa Weary, a great resource that provided fantastic scaffolding to the meaning behind ANZAC Day activities. Piwakawaka akonga with Kereru buddies went to study the memorial crosses displayed on the school front lawn. We counted the crosses and discussed reasons why they had names, numbers, poppies and fern images on them. We then made poppies to display in our classroom.
In addition to these activities, we discussed the values that the ANZACs embodied, such as bravery, loyalty, and selflessness and talked about service men and women who are continuing with those values today.
It has been a short week enjoyed by all.
We welcomed Kristoff to Piwakawaka. We wish him and his family a fulfilling time in Piwakawaka.
May you have a great weekend.
