Drop, Cover and Hold!

Paula Stewart —

On Thursday Takitimu were part of a nationwide "Shake Out" where all schools participated to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake... Drop, Cover and Hold.

Ruru were experts in sharing their ideas on what to do in the event of an earthquake. They practiced staying calm and thinking about their surroundings and what to do next. After discussing our plan at school they started talking about what would happen at home and where their evacuation meeting point is.  We looked at school plans and different household and community plans at getready.govt.nz - make sure you check it out to update your family plan.

In Maths on Thursday and Friday this week we explored using different units (teaspoon, tablespoon, cup and bowls) to estimate and measure volume and capacity. We looked at how much was in a drink bottle, compared to a milk container. To help with our investigation we measured the volume of popcorn kernels and then estimated how many cups a half cup of kernels would make of popcorn. We had predictions ranging from 6 cups to 20 cups. Amazingly enough we had exactly 16 cups...one for each student at school today (Would like to say this was planned but a total fluke!) We finished of our investigation by designing popcorn holders.

If you haven't already returned the beach trip consent from yet please have this returned by Tuesday 23rd October. Thank you
