Kereru - Maths, Literacy, Music and Deep Cove

Liz Whitehead —

It has been an eventful week in Kereru this week.

We have had a lot going on in Kereru with students involved in learning activities both on and offsite this week.
We explored play through the Active Southland Playler, where students were able to explore through play and share ideas with the Active Southland team as to what they would like in the Trailer to be able to play with.  There was a lot of fun and kiwi ingenuity on display for the couple of days.

On Tuesday we had Brayden and Connor here from the Sharks who took a coaching and fun Basketball session with the students of Tui and Kereru.  The tamariki loved this and are really looking forward to heading to the stadium on Tuesday next week for a session in there.

In Literacy this week we broke into groups and pulled apart a picture book, looking at character profiles, language features, parts of speech and our summarising skills.  There are some very cool posters in the classroom showcasing the akongas work. The latter part of the week we have been focussing on nouns and verbs and the role they have in both written and oral language.  Most of us can now tell the difference and show how to use the same word as both a noun and a verb.

At school we have done a lot of movement and breaking up our learning with physical activities, we have had a focus on how we speak to each other respectfully and kindly when we might not like how the game has gone.
We have ended the last couple of days with a music focus.  On Wednesday we got out the Ukuleles and got a number of them tuned so each student has one to use.  Then today we learned two chords and started playing between the chords.  After this we had akonga playing the piano, on the snare drum with the xylophones and the recorder.  It was a lot of fun and seeing the smiles on the faces of our tamariki shows how important the Arts are in our learning as well.

we had two students as part of the Young Einsteins teams this week and have Jack heading off to represent Western Southland at Southland Cross Country on Friday.

OUr tamariki have been very independent this week and I have been able to complete the mid-year testing as they have been working away on their learning.

Our Year 7 and 8 Tamariki have been on Camp at Deep Cove this week and from all accounts are having a fantastic time.

I hope everyone has a great weekend
