Year 7/8 Dodgeball

Colin Hill —

Year 7/8 tamariki across Tamai Kāhui Ako compete for the Tamai Cup.

For the first time Year 7/8 tamariki across Tamai Kāhui Ako competed for the Tamai Cup. The tournament was dodgeball and was held on November 4 at Sporting Edge Indoor Centre.

The cup was created last year, but with Covid 19 restrictions as well as poor weather this didn't happen. This year we were determined for this to happen, so we hired an indoor facility to host the tournament. The weather wasn't going to get in our way.

Twelve teams across three schools (Te Aratai College, Ngutuawa School, and Te Waka Unua)  competed on the day. This was the first-ever tournament for Year 7/8 in our Kāhui Ako. It was great to see the three schools enjoying themselves and celebrating all things Tamai, as well as promoting physical activity.  The day proved popular amongst the tamariki with a number of them saying they couldn't wait for next year.

The final was fought between Te Waka Unua and Te Aratai College. It was so close it came down to extra time and then sudden death. Unfortunately, this still didn't end with a result, so went to Jedi vs Jedi. After several throws and close misses, we finally found a winner with Te Waka Unua taking it out.

A massic thank you to Sporting Edge for the venue, Kelly Sports for the organisation, and Sport Canterbury for funding this awesome occasion.
