Invariably, schools foster valuable social connections and networks. Yet only some intentionally pursue ‘more than a school’ operations to achieve positive education, health and wellbeing impacts for students, staff, families and members of the broader community.

This online webinar event explores the role of schools and school facilities in fostering better school community relations through offering extended activities, programs and services. Examples of ‘schools as community hubs’ will be discussed and research-based insights into how to approach the development of successful ‘schools as community hubs’ will be shared.

About the project: Linking research, policy and practice, the Building Connections: Schools as Community Hubs project was funded from 2019 to 2022 under the Australian Research Council’s Linkage Projects scheme. Based at the University of Melbourne, with a cross-disciplinary research team drawn from Architecture, Education and Urban Planning, the project has investigated how best to plan, design, govern and manage schools to operate successfully as ‘more than a school’, encouraging the development of resilient and connected communities.

Presenter Bio: Dr Ben Cleveland is an Associate Professor in Learning Environments in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne, where he is Co-Director of the Learning Environments Applied Research Network (LEaRN). He is currently Lead Chief Investigator for the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project, ‘Building Connections: Schools as Community Hubs’ (2019-2022). As a consultant he has advised on education facilities worth more than $2B over the last ten years in Victoria, New South Wales, ACT, South Australia, Northern Territory, and New Zealand. He is a past Chair of the Victorian Chapter of Learning Environments Australasia.

Following introductions, and the research presentation, there will be the opportunity for an extensive Q&A session to be curated by Dr Chris Bradbeer, Past Chair of LENZ, and Dr Judy Bruce from Tārai Kura.
