When?
Wednesday the 7th of June, 4pm - 5:45pm ONLINE
What to expect?
This series features a flipped approach. To allow time for interactive discussion with our speakers and each other, you will be provided with a short 10 minute video reflection from our speakers to view prior to the event. This video will be sent to you before the event.
In this online event we will explore different perspectives and experiences of designing inclusive spaces for all ākonga. We will have the chance to hear top tips from the speakers in the pre-video, and then the online event itself will provide us with the opportunity to dig deeper through presentation, facilitated discussion, as well as Q & A.
Join us and the speakers as we learn from and reflect together on these questions:
How can we create/design flexible spaces that suit a range of needs, now and into the future?
What advice would you give leaders undertaking a design process?
In what ways does, or might your school support inclusive practices and specific learner needs through its use of space and resources?
What changes would you make next time around?
Meet our speakers
Deborah Ngan Kee, Occupational Therapist - Learning Support & Te Puna Hanganga, Matihiko | Infrastructure & Digital, Te Mahau | Te Tai Raro
Deborah is an Occupational Therapist with a strong background and understanding of the diverse requirements of ākonga with accessible and diverse learning requirements. She holds a specialist role with the Ministry of Education, Te Puna Hanganga, Matihiko (TPHM) – Infrastructure & Digital.
Deborah uses her practice based knowledge to understand how context related factors can enable student success. She strongly believes that by building "right" from the start all learners will benefit, and that having to adapt non-inclusive environments has significant implications, not only for the individual, but has marked financial and societal costs, too.
Pella Perston, HOD Learning Support / SENCO, Western Springs College / Ngā Puna o Waiōrea
Pella has worked at Western Springs for five years, arriving during the time of building the new school. Prior to working at Western Springs, Pella worked in varied environments, including a five year stint in a mainstream school in England in a Curriculum Support Department. This is where the paradigm of inclusion was the kaupapa of the school. This formative teaching experience has been significant in Pella's understanding and practice of inclusive principles.
Jane Tan, Learning Support teacher, Western Springs College / Ngā Puna o Waiōrea
Jane Tan is a long serving staff member at Western Springs College / Ngā Puna o Waiōrea, joining the Learning Support department in 2010. She has moved with the school from single cell classrooms to the current ILE school. Jane's knowledge of inclusive design continues to develop.
Dr Gabrielle Wall, Principal Consultant | D & G Consulting, General Manager | Greater Christchurch Schools' Network
Gabrielle is an experienced consultant and researcher, with a background in organisational and educational psychology. She works with schools and Kāhui Ako across Aotearoa on strategic planning, community engagement and organisational change.
She has carried out extensive research into the impact of innovative learning environments on student learning and wellbeing outcomes, and frequently works with schools to explore how their vision for teaching and learning can be enabled and supported by their built environments.
Trudi Brocas, Tumuaki | Principal, Auckland Central Specialist School
Trudi is the Principal of Central Auckland Specialist School which was created from the Merger of Sunnydene and Carlson schools. Designing a new purpose built Base school has been a focus in recent years which, alongside the design and build of a number of satellite classes, has led to exploring good design for inclusion in New Zealand and overseas.
Good design starts with the learner, and creating environments that are able to flex and respond to what all students need to be successful at school.
