Hiroshima ヒロシマ : 75th Anniversary of Atomic Bombing

As Hiroshima marked 75th Anniversary of Atomic Bombing this year the students of Junior Japanese classes learned and discussed Hiroshima and Global Peace. Some stories about the atomic bomb dome where Tauhara College Japan Trip group visited last year, a message for global peace engraved on the memorial stone in the Peace Memorial Park and some key numbers related to Hiroshima such as 1945, Aug 6, 8.15am, 140,000, 560,000 were shared with the class.

The students became more aware of the importance of the decisions and actions which the young generation would make for our future. A story called Sadako and the Thousand paper cranes was also shared and every student made an origami paper crane which is a symbol of Peace, Love and Hope.

               やすらかに ねむってください。あやまちはくりかえしませぬから

Rest in peace we will not repeat our mistakes again

Student's responses:

"I never really learned about the bombing of Hiroshima growing up but learning of it now with a better understanding of it is more touching and its easier to sympathize with the people who have to live with the effects of the aftermath".

"This was a horrible event that still affects people today. I truly hope that history doesn't repeat itself "

"I think that the bombing was a really serious message, it’s saying not to start wars, consequences will come from them"
