Tumeke Enterprise Youth Summit and Awards 2019

Nikki Renowden —

Huge congratulations to our six students who attended the Tumeke Enterprise Youth Summit in July. Makayla Dick in Year 10 and Tangiariki Wanikau in Year 12 who were nominated and named as finalists in the awards section of this event, with Makayla winning the Leadership in the Arts Award. A well-deserved recognition Makayla!

During the July holiday break six Tauhara College students attended the Tumeke Enterprise Youth Summit and Awards Night after being nominated as emerging leaders at our school.  This event has been created by entrepreneur and social change advocate Jay McLaren-Harris.  It would be fair to say that they have gained an extremely valuable experience by being part of this. Jay ran an outstanding programme for students from around New Zealand to support their leadership and change-agency.

Alana French, Naomi Riedel, Tilly Marsh, Makayla Dick, Emma Billings and Tangiariki Wanikau were the six Tauhara College students selected to attend. Over their time at the summit they gained a lot of new friends, learnt new things, were pushed outside of their comfort zone and established lifelong skills they will carry with them forever. Each of our students thrived in this environment.

Tangiariki and Makayla were both up for awards on the night and Makayla came away winning the Leadership in Arts Award. She will now be mentored and will attend various trips, which are fantastic opportunities for her. Tangiariki was a finalist for two awards and in addition to being a finalist on the evening, she has also been offered the opportunity to go to Peru for Karate. What an amazing outcome for both of these students. All around it was a successful week and I am sure we will see each of these students step into more leadership roles in the near future.
